Supplies You’ll Need to Make Baby Food

Last year I did a post on the research I did on making baby food. I was still pregnant with my son and, due to the issues we had with my daughter, planned on making all his food.
My son is now 8 months old and I’ve been successfully making his food for a few months! We are doing a combination of baby-lead weaning and the puréed stuff. It turns out that making the food is MUCH easier than I thought. I also found that I didn’t need every baby food making gadget out there. Here are the supplies I use to make purees:
A Ninja chopper
. I looooooove this thing. A friend recommended it to me and it is the best baby food making investment I’ve made. I’m not sure I can live without one now that we have it! It came with a pitcher and a smaller bowl so it acts as our blender, chopper and is great for the purees. I use it for tons of non baby food things now (smoothies, salsa, salad dressing…the list goes on and on) so it was a great kitchen investment.
– Ice cube trays. Lots of moms use just normal ice cube trays you can pick up at the dollar store but I like how easily the food slides out of my silicone tray. Mine also came with a nice little snap on lid so I don’t feel bad about stacking things on top of it. The one in the link isn’t the exact one I have but it is very similar.
– Freezable individual food storage containers for fresh food. I love my Dr. Brown’s Stackable Jars! They are larger than we need so I only fill about half full, but they are great to use for storing fresh food in the fridge and taking food on the go, plus they are freezable.
– Gallon freezer bags. These come in handy when storing frozen food so you don’t have to buy 100 trays. I’ve also seen Momma’s store their frozen food in individual breast milk bags when taking it on the go.
– Lots of microwave safe baby bowls. I say microwaveable because I warm up most of my sons food (being that it all comes out of the freezer).  These are actually kind of hard to find…Gerber sells the ones that we use
(note- I’m not in love with the lids on these. I can’t always get them to snap closed but if I’m taking food on the go, I use my Dr. Brown’s jars anyway).
– A steam basket for cooking your food. You can pick these up at almost any grocery store. You could also use a fancy counter top steamer or a microwave steamer…but I find that a plain old steamer basket works just fine for us.

– Recipes. Or at least an idea of how to make baby food. Check out our favorite resources here and check out a little bit later when I talk about how to make the basics.

And that’s IT! You probably have a lot of the things on that list hanging out in your kitchen already. Easier than you thought, right? Baby food making Mommas- did I miss any of your must haves?
